Spiritual Formation
We have Christian formation on Sunday mornings at 9:30 am (children and youth meet September-May). All of our instructors and nursery workers have gone through training to make sure St. Luke’s is a safe place for children. We would love for you to join us! Email info@stlukeshs.org for more information.
We offer two classes that many newcomers take advantage of. Our New at St. Luke’s class is a three-week course taught twice per year in January and September. It orients newcomers to St. Luke’s and our ministries. Whether you are brand new to church or have been an Episcopalian for decades, we hope you will join us. We also offer an eight-week Confirmation class once per year. Confirmation and Reception are mature affirmations of faith in front of the bishop, and is available for those at least 12 years of age and older.
We welcome families of all kinds at St. Luke’s! For families with children, we have Sunday school for Kindergarten-4th grade and for teenagers on Sunday morning (Sunday school meets at 9:30). We also have a nursery available during formation and worship hours. During the 10:45 service, we have a children’s sermon designed for children grade 4 and below. We also invite children to be involved in the 10:45 worship service as acolytes.
St. Luke’s has a tight-knit youth group open to 5th-12th grades. Our goal is to have a group where every young person knows they are loved by God and can come to know God. We meet weekly in Sunday school at 9:30, and bimonthly for Sunday afternoon activities with a Hot Springs ecumenical youth group. We also have special events and diocesan events with Episcopalians across the state.
Adult Sunday school happens in the parish hall at 9:30, following the 9:00 coffee hour. We have a range of classes throughout the year focused on Holy Scripture and the Episcopal tradition, often taught by our rector. In every class, we want to know what you think and what you struggle with. Previous classes have included a historian’s look at the last days of Jesus of Nazareth, The Episcopal Church 101, and summer book club.
Our Thursday night Bible study group meets weekly at 6:00 (evening prayer in the chapel at 5:30). We do more in-depth study on Holy Scripture and how we read the Bible in the Anglican tradition. Previous classes have studied the book of Psalms, on Mary in Holy Scripture, and on the Resurrection accounts.
Every fourth Wednesday, members of St. Luke’s get together at a local restaurant (location TBD) to pray, study, and have fellowship. In 2024-2025, we will be looking at the book of Psalms. Each month we will look at a different psalm and how it teaches us how to pray.
St. Luke’s has two half-day silent retreats each year, one in Advent and one in Lent. They are sponsored by the Daughters of the King. Fr. Mark takes us through three meditations, each separated by a period of silent prayer. The Rite of Reconciliation, commonly called Confession, is available. The retreats are always open to the community.
